Creating your Christmas tablescape

'Tis the season to celebrate, entertain and welcome family and friends to your home to share the Christmas cheer.

If you are entertaining this Christmas, decorating your home is just as import as what's on the menu, and so, what goes on the dining table will be taking centrestage. Let's prepare to shine with some tablescape tips from our friends at Spaces.

A tablescape is more than just a centrepiece. It's about carefully choosing pieces such as your table linen, dinnerware, napkins, napkin rings and other decorative elements that work together harmoniously to dress up your dining table.

At the centre of it all is your centrepiece. Your centrepieces and decoration add interest, visual impact, character and a finishing touch to your table. As they say, first impressions last, and your tablescape helps to set the mood for the meal to come.

But be careful, there are rules to be followed.

• Don't get too technical with your centrepiece design. Sometimes you may be surprised that an existing decor item can be transformed into a beautiful centrepiece by adding some live flowers that suit your decor.

• Don't overcrowd the table. Keep in mind that your guests will need to interact not only through conversation, but also through sharing dishes.

• Don't use too many scented items in your centrepiece. You still want your guests to smell the aroma of freshly baked cookies and cakes, or roasted potatoes and ham. So you may want to use natural fragrances like eucalyptus twigs or rosemary, and incorporate them in your floral arrangements. Fresh peppermint tied to napkins and cinnamon sticks with a lit candle also add a nice touch.

• Don't forget lighting. Whether you intend to use candles, string lights or a combination of both, the added glow is perfect for late-evening dinners.

• Do maintain a cohesive look throughout. Make sure the centrepiece works well with your table runners, place mats, napkins, etc.

• You may, however, create contrast with the size of the items you put together.

What's to be considered when thinking of your centrepiece?

Think of the effect you want. Will your centrepiece tie everything together or accentuate? Consider size and shape of your table before choosing your pieces, and consider the plating arrangement and servers on which the meal will be placed.

But whatever you do, think outside the box with some unconventional items that can make a pretty awesome centrepiece.
