Former Top Cop is SAJ's new financial controller

Three-time winner of the Policeman of the Year award, Raymond Ernandez is passionate about mentoring the youth. In fact, it was his sterling contribution to the community relations portfolio of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) that earned him the honours.

Raised by a father who also served the JCF, Ernandez entered the 'family business' after graduating from Ardenne High School in 1993. While serving the JCF he decided to pursue further studies and discovered he was a natural at accounting and enrolled at the University of the West Indies where he earned his bachelor's degree with honours in accounting and management studies. He later completed a master of science degree in accounting.

 

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

 

After serving his country for 11 years, Ernandez made the decision to pursue employment in corporate Jamaica to gain experience in the field of accounting. He obtained employment in the financial sector in 2006 and spent the time mastering his skills prior to joining the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) as the company's financial controller (FC) in November 2014.

Ernandez has always had an interest in the shipping industry and considers it an honour to be able to make a contribution to the development of the SAJ.

Pleased with his recent confirmation, Ernandez said of the SAJ: "I am proud to be a member of this exceptionally dynamic and highly regarded management team."

The new FC manages a team of 14 persons whom he describes as "excellent". "I have inherited a highly motivated and driven team of accountants who represent an eclectic mix of young and experienced individuals," Ernandez said.

He noted that his objective is to bring the knowledge and experience gained in the financial sector to the SAJ so as to continue to streamline the association's processes in line with the modernisation plans of the company.

"My aim will be to continue the synchronising of technology to create an even more efficient system," Ernandez said.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica. An avid football fan and player, he supports the Red Devils of Manchester United. Ernandez currently plays in a forward position on the SAJ's football team. He is married to Joan and is raising their son, Chemar, and niece, Vascina.
