Maritime & Transport Services (MTS) Ltd, the local agents for Maersk Shipping Line and Sealand, recently led all local efforts to transport relief items to Haiti in the wake of that country's devastation by Hurricane Matthew.

More than 900 people died when the storm hit in October, with up to 90 per cent of some areas of southern Haiti being destroyed.

The plight of the thousands of Haitians who suffered devastating losses prompted a massive relief effort in Jamaica. Many local companies, government and non-government agencies, churches, service clubs, schools and ordinary citizens donated large quantities of food, water, bedding, construction materials and more to this effort.

In an bid to assist the coordinated efforts of the United Nations World Food Programme, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, MTS and Maersk Line/Sealand donated shipping and logistics services to move several containers packed with relief items from Jamaica to Haiti.

Maritime & Transport Services and Maersk Line/Sealand said they were pleased to play a role in this humanitarian effort to rebuild Haiti, noting that "we recognise as good Caribbean citizens, we must do all we can to help our regional neighbours in their rebuilding efforts".
