Tuesday Talk

Published:Monday | November 19, 2018 | 12:00 AM

1. It was a day when decent, law-abiding citizens ceded control of the streets of Kingston to the lumpen. Supporters of the ruling party broke all the rules of the road - overtaking recklessly, disregarding stoplights and four-way crossings, blocking inter-sections, protruding body parts, etc. It happens every year when the parties hold their annual conferences. Yet, we glibly talk about returning order in society. The supporters know that there is no punishment for breaking the law, and so, they continue.

2. It's really about connections. The person who has no connections will find roadblocks in the way at every turn. A poor person is detained for a few hours because he was ostensibly in the wrong company. If he tells the truth during a job interview or for a visa application, he will be turned down. However, someone with connections can do the most egregious thing, including serving time, and all is forgiven. They get the good jobs and the visas.

3. So the retiree now has to sell her dream house and split the proceeds with the worthless ex-husband. Some mistakes are so costly, one would love to be able to see into the future.
