‘I deserve a call-up’

Two goals in two Red Stripe Premier League matches isn't exactly a hot streak, but add the 16 Craig Foster netted in Reno FC's 2013-14 Western Confed Super League title-winning

campaign and you will see why the striker believes he should be a member of the

senior Reggae Boyz squad.

He told The Gleaner that his goals-per-game ratio is among the best in the country and that, based on that fact, he is hoping Reggae Boyz coach Winfried Sch‰fer invites him to the senior national squad in time for the Digicel Caribbean Cup, which is set to be hosted in Jamaica from November 10-18, 2014.

"Like anyone else, I think I deserve a fair chance on the national team," he said, "not only with regards to the goals I score, but what I can bring in general to the national squad.

"I am aware that I need to do more, but how many young players are standing out at the club level?" he asked. "I am one of a few young players that are doing the work and I really do want to play for the country. It's every footballer's dream to play for their country," he added.

Foster has worn the national colours before, but as part of the national Under-20 squad in the 2010 CONCACAF qualifying rounds, scoring eight goals in five matches.

Since then, he has not seen any form of national duty, but has represented his club team well in all competitions.

Best striker

The 23-year-old striker is currently the club's best striker, with his coach Patrick Graham routinely employing him upfront on his own. His pace, skill and nose for goal has made him a fan favourite and opposing defenders' worse nightmare.

He said he was given a raw deal following his 2010 returns for the national Under-20 side, but has been working hard at his game to catch the eyes of the national coach in time for the country's busy international schedule.

"The next World Cup is four years away, but in-between that there are some big assignments and I would like nothing more right now than to be a full Reggae Boy," said Foster.

He has gained valuable experience while playing in Sweden for Club Motala AIF in 2011-12, and went on loan to fellow Swedish club IFK Mariehmn, scoring 11 times in 24 matches, in matches for both Swedish clubs.

"I do believe there is a place for me in the national team and, when I do get the call, hopefully I will still be scoring many goals. It is my dream to make my ability work for the Reggae Boyz," said Foster.
