Classy Cornwall blank St James

Cornwall College maintained their stranglehold on Group A of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup with another classy performance yesterday.

The many-time champions stopped the previously unbeaten St James High 2-0 in the Montego Bay derby.

An own goal gave Cornwall the lead midway the first half, and the game was made safe just after the halftime break when Jourdane Fletcher latched on to a pass to fire low and hard past St James' goalkeeper Omar Mazelin.

The eleven-time champions moved their points tally to a maximum 12 from four matches, while scoring 22 goals and conceding one. St James are second in the group with seven points.

A delighted Cornwall College coach said the win was just reward for their hard work.

"This was a very good game between these schools," said Dr Dean Weatherly, the Cornwall team coach.

"I think we won the match because we wanted it more. It was just our day," he added.

It was indeed sweet revenge for a team, which, for the past two years, has tasted defeat at the hands of St James, but with a squad built to win, they are finally looking like worthy challenges to the champions, St Elizabeth Technical.

"The way we approach our game, I think we stand a good chance of winning at least one trophy this year," Weatherly said.

In another match, Glenmuir High brushed aside Garvey Maceo 2-0 to stay atop Group M. Bustamante High and Porus played to a 2-2 draw.

Frome Technical produced a mild upset when they used a stoppage-time goal to get the better of Rusea's.

With the win, Frome took the lead in Group B on nine points. Rusea's are on six.
