Sporting Central boot wasteful Granville

Sporting Central FC sent a wasteful Granville United from the 2014 Flow Knock Out Competition yesterday when a late strike by Kavin Bascom gave them a 1-0 win in the game which was played at the Granville Community Centre in St James.

The goal, which came in the 84th minute saw Bascom going high for a swirling corner kick and nodding powerfully beyond the bewildered Granville custodian to give his team victory and a place in the competition's quarter-final round.

"We started out flat because the players did not trust the surface," said Nigel Stewart, the victorious coach. "However, once we settled in the second half, we were able to do enough to come away with this win."

For Granville's coach Tracey Reid, who saw her team squandering numerous chances, especially in the first half, it was a most disappointing result for her.

"We got too many easy chances to be leaving the venue as a loser today," said Reid. "We had most of the possession and created the better chances, but the players did not produce the goods when the chances came."

In a competitive first half, Granville should have taken the lead from as early as the third minute when Lavado Whyte broke free before the goal but fired straight at the well-positioned goalkeeper to keep the scoresheet blank.

On the stroke of half-time, Granville was again wasteful when skipper Deshawn Wollery crossed perfectly to Theo Shaw in the goal area but he flicked his shot straight at the goalkeeper. The half ended shortly after.

Sporting Central started the second half looking quite good but the early chances went to Granville. In the 60th minute, Oral Pringle fumbled from close range and three minutes later, Snow got a clear header but cleared the crossbar with his effort.
