Hyde shines in 400m hurdles

World Junior 400 metres hurdles champion Jaheel Hyde of Wolmer's Boys, outclassed his rivals in the Under-20 400m hurdles clocking an impressive 49.78 seconds to win the event on the opening day of the two-day Carifta Trials at the National Stadium yesterday. The meet continues today at 11 a.m.

St Elizabeth Technical's (STETHS) Marvin Williams ran a season best for second in 50.59 with his teammate Robin Black, who was third in a personal best 51.85.

Middle distance specialist Jauvaney James of STETHS showed off his wide-ranging talent by taking the boys' Under-18 400m hurdles in 52.77. St Jago High's Timor Barrett was second in 53.65 ahead of Kingston College's Chadwick Brown, 56.79.

St Jago High's Natallia Whyte and Calabar High's Michael O'Hara captured the boys' and girls' Under-20 100 metres, respectively.

Whyte, the country's most outstanding female sprinter at last year's World Junior Championships, won impressively in 11.71 seconds beating Vere Technical's Renae Medley (11.76) with Shauna Helps of Womer's Girls, third in 11.78.

In the boys' 100m, O'Hara caught the fast-starting Raheem Chambers of St Jago late to win in 10.45. Chambers clocked 10.48 for second with St Elizabeth Technical's Nigel Ellis running on strongly for third in 10.58. The athletes ran against a negative head wind of 1.5 metres per second.

The Under-18 100m winners were also from St Jago and Calabar.

Former Hydel High athlete Shaniel English, now at St Jago, continued her dominance over new teammate Kimone Shaw. English led from start to finish to clock 11.59. Shellece Clarke of Edwin Allen ran on strongly for second in 11.66 with Shaw third in 11.67. Calabar's Tyreke Wilson (10.55)beat his teammate Xavier Angus (10.58) in the boys' Under-18 100 metres.
