Athletes happy for NCB’s support of Intercol

SEVERAL ATHLETES who will be on show at the NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships have expressed delight with NCB's sponsorship of the meet.

The championships will be held inside the National Stadium on March 31 and April 1, and has received a $3 million boost from NCB.

Elaine Thompson from the University of Technology said the input will help her to perform at her best.

"Although I do not know if I am doing 100m or 200m I do expect a personal best as training is going well," said Thompson, who ran a blinder on the second leg of the clubs and institutions' 4x100m at the Gibson-McCook relays.

Former world junior 400m hurdles champion, Janieve Russell, was also excited.

"I am happy that NCB, Gatorade and Digicel are all on board, and with grants given to athletes for breaking records this will be a big motivation for us. This has really enlightened me and I will go out and do my very best, and hopefully, I will be rewarded with a big incentive," she said.

Gibson-McCook Relays

At the Gibson-McCook Relays, Julian Forte was one of the most outstanding senior sprinters on show.

"Getting this big sponsorship for Intercollegiate Championships is a good thing for the sports as we will be able to showcase our talent to a big crowd inside the National Stadium. Support for Intercol has not been good over the years, despite most of the athletes from these institutions competing at the highest level for the country. But now I cannot wait, as I am looking forward to the meet as this is my first year competing here, and I am hoping to put on a big performance," said Forte.
