MoBay City Run targets $5m

Five million dollars is the target for this year's Flow MoBay City Run, which is $2 million more than last year's inaugural staging. The organisers of the charity road race believe the target may not be reached this year, but is achievable in the short term given the growth of the event.

"We really don't know if we will make that target this year, but certainly, in a short time, I am certain we will," declared Janet Silvera, the chief organiser for the event.

Registration

Registration up to press time yesterday had zipped past the 2,000 mark and is showing signs of strong interest in participation.

One group alone is expected to field a massive group numbered at 520 participants, prompting an elated Silvera to divulge plans to add a half marathon to the mushrooming event, which, although is in its infancy, has taken on great significance as they aim to raise much-needed funds for students at the four tertiary institutions in the second city, the University of the West Indies (Western Campus), the University of Technology (Western Campus), the Sam Sharpe Teachers' College, and the Montego Bay Community College.

More than 100 students from these institutions benefited from funds raised at last year's inaugural staging.

The race will start at 6 a.m. and will be run through the streets of Montego Bay past interesting landmarks such as the historic Sam Sharpe Square and the Sangster International Airport.
