Vidal ban after DUI

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP):

Chile's star midfielder Arturo Vidal was banned from driving for four months by a Chilean judge yesterday after he crashed his Ferrari while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Despite the judge's ruling, Chile national team coach Jorge Sampaoli said Vidal can continue to play for the Chile, which is among the favourites in ongoing Copa America, the South American championship.

"I don't like to remove or exclude someone for making a mistake," Sampaoli told a news conference.

Vidal, known as 'King Arthur' in Chile, appeared in court yesterday after being held overnight in a local jail. He suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did his wife, who was a passenger.

Later he offered a teary apology.

The court said Vidal showed 1.21 grams of alcohol in his blood per litre. Any level above 0.8 can be punished by up to three years in prison.

Vidal scored twice on Monday in Chile's 3-3 draw with Mexico and is the leading scorer in the tournament, with three goals.

Wilshere fined over parade outburst

LONDON (AP):

The English Football Association has fined Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere US$62,800 for a foul-mouthed outburst towards rival club Tottenham during his team's FA Cup victory celebrations.

Wilshere took to the microphone during Arsenal's open-top bus parade in London last month and chanted a song about Spurs that contained an expletive. He was in the middle of another expletive-filled song when Arsenal broke off from the live broadcast on the club's in-house media channel.

As well as the fine, the FA says Wilshere was "severely warned as to his future conduct after admitting to a charge of misconduct".
