Ashley to fight for vacant title October 29

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight champion Alicia 'Slick' Ashley will get the opportunity to regain her title on Thursday, October 29 at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, New York, when she takes on Republic of Ireland's Christina 'Lightning' McMahon over 10 rounds.

The fight had been originally scheduled for last month, but was postponed because of some concerns of the New York State Athletic Commission, with the supporting fights on the card. The word out of New York yesterday was "all is set, and we are ready to go".

The fight will be for the title left vacant by Jackie Nava, who defeated Ashley on September 6 last year in Mexico. Since then, Nava also won the World Boxing Association title in the same weight class, and has been declared a Super champion. She, therefore, vacated the WBC title, and this is what Ashley and McMahon will be fighting for on October 29.

Anxious to get in the ring

Ashley told The Gleaner yesterday that she was very disappointed when the fight was postponed last month, but "very happy that it is going to take place now". She then added, " I have even more of an incentive to put on a good fight now, and I am enjoying every minute of training for this fight. It is a year since I have fought and I am really anxious to get back into the ring and regain my title. I love being world champion."

Ashley goes into the ring with a 22-10-1 record with four knockouts while her opponent has a 7-0 record with three knockouts. Both boxers are known for their speed, and indications are that it will be a classic boxing match between two smart fighters, who are blessed with exceptional boxing skills.
