Atkinson ties 100m breaststroke record

Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson bounced back from a disappointing Rio 2016 Olympic Games, tying the world record in the short-course 100m breaststroke on the opening day of the 2016 FINA World Cup in Chartres, France, yesterday.

Atkinson, who finished eighth in the final in Rio, swam 1:02.36, matching the time done by both her and Ruta Meilutyte.

The Jamaican registered that time at the 2014 Doha World Cup a year after Meilutyte did so.

As a result of yesterday's win, Atkinson earned for herself US$1,500 and 10 bonus points towards her overall FINA World Cup tally.

She has, however, missed out on the US$10,000 prize offered for world records as this is only given if the record is broken as opposed to being tied.
