JRFU to host U-21 developmental tournament
The Jamaica Rugby Football Union (JRFU) will be hosting an Under-21 developmental seven-a-side tournament in Kingston on Saturday.
Union Chairman Jerry Benzwick says that his association is putting on the competition with the hopes of improving its national selection pool.
"We're hoping to unearth young players to join our National 7s programme," he said. "We want to switch out the guard now. We have too many old players and we need to see what the young people are bringing."
The JRFU is expecting 15 pick-up teams, made up of players from both clubs and schools, to be competing throughout the day.
Benzwick said he expects to see six or seven male teams and at least three female teams taking part.
He said that he is hoping for an exciting day of rugby football, as he was told by many young players that they are looking forward to the event.
"I spoke to many players, young and old. The young ones can't wait for the tournament and the older ones ask me why they never had a competition of this kind when they were under 21 and were able to play."
The tournament kicks off at 10a.m. at Emmet Park, St George's College.
