Three Barbadians log wins at Woodbine
ETOBICOKE, Ontario (CMC):
Three Barbadian horsemen were part of the winning connections of the midweek racecard at the Woodbine Racetrack on Wednesday.
Ace veteran jockey Patrick Husbands and his nephew Simon, along long-standing trainer Ricky Griffith logged wins in each of the last three races on the day's eight-race card at Canada' premier racing oval.
The elder Husbands steered 5-1 chance Conquest Boogaloo to a half-length victory in the CAN $62,300 sixth race, going 1,700 metres on the all-weather track.
Husbands moved Conquest Boogaloo up to force the pace in the middle of the backstretch and chased early leader Field of Courage, under Jerome Lermyte, three and four-wide on the far turn.
He and Conquest Boogaloo duelled with Field of Courage into the stretch and were headed, but Husbands got the five-year-old, dark bay gelding to dig in, take the lead in the middle of the stretch and hold under a drive to finish in a time of one minute, 45.24 seconds.
17TH WIN
This was the 17th win for the elder Husbands in the one-month-old season and is third in the jockeys' standings behind leader Eurico da Silva, on 23, and Rafael Hernandez, on 18.
Griffith, a former Barbados champion jockey, collected his first win of the season, preparing the 2-5 favourite Katalox, ridden by Jesse Campbell, which won by 1 1/2 lengths in the CDN$39,800 seventh race over the 1,200m Polytrack.
The younger Husbands brought the curtain down on the day's racing when he drove 5-1 chance Fiery Bear to a 3 1/4-length victory in the CDN$19,500 final race, going 1,700m on the Polytrack.
