Rare white marlin landed

PORT ANTONIO, Portland

A rare white marlin catch was the highlight on day two of the inaugural West Indies Petroleum-sponsored ‘Super Stars of Port Antonio’ International Marlin Tournament yesterday.

Angler John Myers aboard the boat Bye Pass landed a 51lbs white marlin, which is the only landed marlin so far.

Chief  judge and weight master Reginald McLean explained that a white marlin usually weighs a little over 100 lbs, which qualifies Thursday’s catch as a legal one.

“The minimum weight for a white marlin is 25lbs," commented McLean.

 “And therefore the catch is legal. However, I now have to check the rule book to find out how many points are to be awarded to the angler. Similarly, a sailfish weighing a minimum of 25lbs is also a legal catch. But it is important to note that any blue marlin that is landed has to measure a minimum of 99 inches.”

The landed sailfish, which was caught by anglers aboard the boat Safe Passage, weighed 33.5 lbs. 

And on a day when Portland experienced intermittent showers and a thunder storm, dozens of dolphins, barracuda, bonito, and tuna were landed by several anglers.

The tournament enters its final day this morning and according to Director of Game Fish Events and chief organiser Robert ‘Bobby’ Stewart, the high point for today will be the prize giving and a stage show, which will provide quality entertainment for the local people.

A beach party at the Errol Flynn marina tomorrow, featuring a Trinidadian soca band, Kesnar, will bring the curtains down on the Super Stars of Port Antonio international marlin tournament.
