Shining Light upsets at 8-1

SHINING LIGHT stormed past the battling pair of LOOSE CANNON and POLLY B inside the last half-furlong to score an 8-1 upset at 1200 metres in the ninth race at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Straightening fourth along the rail with jockey Aaron Chatrie, SHINING LIGHT had to be switched from behind the battling leaders a furlong out before lengthening his strides to hit the front for a one-and-a-half length win.

Even-money favourite LOOSE CANNON, who carried near-topweight 56.0 kilos, found POLLY B stubborn on the lead, but eventually stayed on for second, a length and a quarter ahead of his nemesis.

The down-in-class pair of GARY GLITTER and PROLIFIC PRINCESS took turns at threatening briefly but neither carried through what appeared to be good backstretch moves.

PROLIFIC PRINCESS stalked the pace in third but was relegated by GARY GLITTER two and a half furlongs out. However, GARY GLITTER's run flattened out on straightening wide, while SHINING LIGHT took the shortest route into the lane and found extra when asked to go after the leaders.

SHINING LIGHT was one of many upsetters on the 10-race card, which opened with the disqualification of 1-9 favourite YAYA'S DREAM for repeatedly hanging right into the path of 7-1 chance WILSON, who was awarded the race after a lengthy stewards' enquiry.

BITTER PILL

YAYA DREAM's disqualification was a bitter pill for champion jockey Omar Walker to swallow on his second day back in the saddle from a three-month injury lay-up, signalling an upcoming suspension for the six-time champion.

Meanwhile, upsetters such as 11-1 stinger MAACHU PICHU in the fourth, GENERAL REPORT at 7-1 in the seventh and SHE'S PLUMMY at 5-1 in the eighth, ensured a $1.8m payout in the Twilight 6.

The second Pick 4, comprising GENERAL REPORT, SHE'S PLUMMY, SHINING LIGHT and 4-1 shot ONE GREAT TRAIN, returned in excess of $297,000, but the single-winner bonus remains untouched at $3.1m.

Trainer Carl Anderson saddled two winners, GENERAL REPORT and TWILIGHT DREAMS, one of three winning favourites on the card.

Chatrie won the last two races astride SHINING LIGHT and ONE GREAT TRAIN to share riding honours with champion apprentice Anthony Thomas, who was aboard TWILIGHT DREAMS and SHE'S PLUMMY.

Racing resumes at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
