Prep Champs attracts more than 1,800 athletes

More than 1,800 athletes from 55 schools will battle for top honours when the Preparatory Schools Championship is contested at the National Stadium from May 31 to June 2.

Now in its 41st year, the meet will include hurdling for the first time. This was announced yesterday at the launch of the event at Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory.

Speaking at the launch, Jamaica Independent Schools Association (JISA) president Karlene Bisnott thanked title sponsor Tastee Jamaica as well as Seprod, Reggae Jammin' and Best Dressed Chicken, Carimed Limited, Sevens Seas, Atlas Security, Suretime Medical, Rainbow Awnings, Pure National Ice, Puma, hydration partner Hi-Lite, and Caribbean Airlines for their input and asked for more help.

"We welcome the help we get from our sponsors, and we are still seeking sponsors," Bisnott said.

Embrace fair play

She called on students and coaches to embrace fair play at the upcoming meet. Speaking specifically to the competitors, she encouraged, "All we're asking our athletes. Just to go out and do your best because only your best is good enough."

The meet will include two new events, the 60m hurdles for Class One boys and girls. These events are being sponsored by sister companies Best Dressed Chicken and Reggae Jamming.

Among those attending the event was former national 400m record holder Jermaine Gonzales, who will be working as a coach at the meet for the first time. Gonzales, a coach at Sts Peter and Paul, is eagerly looking forward to the meet.

"I'm enjoying being a coach, and especially for the younger ones. You know, I have a little boy as well, so it's good to experience different personalities," he said.
