Alligator Pond win Manchester Major League

Alligator Pond emerged the 2018 Mikail Phillips-sponsored Manchester Major League champions after outlasting Los Perfectos 2-0 at the Manchester High playing field last weekend.

This was the second time Alligator Pond were winning the championship. Their first tile came in 2014. The win on Sunday was set up by Javian Griffiths' first-half goal in the 34th minute and then by Lost Perfectos' costly own goal (Winston Simpson), to make it 2-0, a minute after resumption.

Alligator Pond's 2-0 win is not a surprise. They had beaten Los Perfectos twice in the preliminary rounds, including the opening match of the season, where they won 1-0. This was repeated in the return phase of the preliminary round.

However, their passage to the final had with it a twist of fate. They were beaten 2-1 by Mile Gully in the semi-finals, however, that result was overturned three days later when they successfully charged that Mile Gully had won using an eligible player, who needed to serve a one-match suspension.

Starz Academy head Manchester Under-17 second-round qualifiers

Record-breaking Starz Academy head the teams that have already qualified for the second round of the 2018 Moorland Development-sponsored Pat Anderson Under-17 football competition.

Starz Academy, which poured in 21 goals on Hope Village in an earlier fixture, completed the preliminary round in Zone Two, after accumulating a maximum 18 points from six games. They have also been impressive in the goal statistics, netting 32 and conceding only two. The nearest challengers are Villa United who have also competed their preliminary fixture, having won four games and losing two.

360 Degrees and Mile Gully are the certain qualifiers from Zone One. No other team has exceeded eight points with just one round to be completed. These two have completed their fixtures with 12 points each.

Zone Three has proven the most challenging. Downs have completed their preliminary games with 13 points from six games. Greenvale Academy have 12 points from four games with Manchester Academy on nine points.

JCA to name National Primary League in honour of Pat Anderson

The current Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA)-run National Primary School cricket competition will be renamed the Pat Anderson National Primary School competition in honour of the former lifetime member who died recently. This declaration has been made by president of the JCA, Billy Heaven.

Anderson was credited with providing sponsorship in the early days of the competition, through his employers, Alcan Jamaica.

Sponsorship initially was provided for Manchester, but the competition was later expanded to all the other parishes.

Significantly, Manchester won all the parish and national youth competitions last year. Nazareth Primary won the National Primary competition, Belair won the Preparatory School competition and the parish youth team won the Kingston Wharves youth competition.

Anderson, as president of the Manchester Cricket Association is credited for laying that foundation, Heaven said.
