'Police' out of retirement to face Leblond in Contender

Donovan 'Police' Campbell is set to come out of retirement to face Dave 'Fast and Furious' Leblond in the Wray and Nephew Contender Series this evening.

The 2012 champion of the competition makes his return to the ring after Leblond's original opponent for the second round, Michael 'Wasp' Gardener, did not make weight at yesterday's weigh-in. This led to a protest from Leblond's camp, who said they will not face any overweight boxers.

Leblond's trainer, Patrice Trudeau, said that while he is disappointed that his boxer will not be facing Gardener, he wanted to repay the support shown to Leblond by the Jamaican public, by giving it a match tonight.

"This should've been the final because these are the two best fighters in the competition," Trudeau told The Gleaner. "But we're still happy we have an opponent and didn't come to Jamaica for nothing. It's always a thrill and a pleasure to fight in front of the Jamaican fans because we really appreciate the support that they've always provided for Dave.

"The fight with Gardener is not gonna happen within the Contender, but we're more than happy to meet him any time, any day when he can make the weight. Hopefully, we can find a promoter for that."

Campbell, 49 years old, last competed last October when he faced Fabian Tucker in a contest which ended in a draw, after which he declared his retirement. He has a professional record of 14 wins (three knockouts), 10 losses and two draws. Leblond, 24 years old, has a professional record of three wins, four losses, and no draws.

The contest gets underway at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium at 9:45 this evening.
