Taylor happy with Ja Women defeating Guyana in CWI T20 opener

Jamaica Women captain Stafanie Taylor believes defeating Guyana Women by an impressive eight wickets at Sabina Park in the first round of the Cricket West Indies Women Twenty20 Blast is the ideal start the team needs in its quest to claim the title.

Jamaica, who last lifted the title three seasons ago, first restricted the Guyanese to a modest 75 for eight off their maximum overs with Taylor, bowling off-spin, claiming two for 11, and pacer Roshauna Outar, two for 12, off their allotted four overs.

Led by opener Jodian Morgan, 19, Natasha McLean, 16 not out, and Taylor, 16, and vice-captain Chadeen Nation, 15 not out, the Cleon Smith-coached unit then coasted to 76 for two off 16.1 Overs.

The match-up, which was the feature of a day-night double header at the venue, was preceded by defending champions Trinidad and Tobago beating the Leeward Islands by 68 runs.

“A convincing win like this should definitely send a message to all the teams, and that is exactly what we want,” expressed Taylor.

“In our team meeting before the start of the match, we said that we wanted to start the tournament on a high, and led by our bowling unit, we were able to do so.

"Our batters then followed up and finished off the encounter, and for that we are delighted,’’ she added.

Jamaica will next play the Windward Islands at Kensington Park tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., while Trinidad will play Guyana in the opening game of another double header at Sabina Park at 9:30 a.m.

The feature game, Barbados versus Leeward Islands, will bowl off at 6:30 p.m.
