Sterling moves to Tivoli

Discarded national striker Newton Sterling says the need for more playing time is what prompted his move from Arnett Gardens to rivals Tivoli Gardens ahead of this season's Red Stripe Premier League competition.

The 33-year-old Sterling, who spent the last 10 years at Arnett Gardens, told The Gleaner that the move to Tivoli also represents a fresh start to his career.

"I just needed some playing time to show myself because I am getting up in age, and so, I just need playing time to score goals and end my career on a high," said Sterling.

"I can't be sitting on the bench, and is only when coach feels like he needs help, that is only time he sends for me most of the time, and so, it wasn't hiding because everybody saw it," he said.

"Me and everybody good at Arnett because it is one of those things where you just have to move on sometimes in life," Sterling said. "People have been seeing me over seasons where I come in and I score in five matches straight and then I go missing again because the coach has different plans," he said.

Sterling, who netted six goals last season for Arnett, pointed out that he is feeling at home at Tivoli because the fans have embraced him and have been shown him a lot of love and appreciation.

"So far, I have been getting playing at time Tivoli, and based on how Tivoli play, I have been seeing results already, and the spectators have greeted me with open arms, and so, I have been working with them," said Sterling, while adding that he is hoping to rediscover his scoring form with Tivoli this season.

"My aim is to score as many goals as possible for Tivoli this season and help the team to win the Premier League title," he said.
