Morris goal sinks MBU

Portmore United's Ricardo Morris has expressed his delight after he netted his first goal of the season to carry his team to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Montego Bay United (MBU) in their Red Stripe Premier League encounter at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The victory moved Portmore, the defending champions, to 18 points. Morris, who tormented the Montego Bay defence with his swift dribbling skills and clever off the ball movement, scored the lone goal of the match with a rasping shot from 25 yards out, which went like a rocket past Montego Bay custodian Aian Miller in the 42nd minute.

Morris said yesterday's goal lifted his confidence going forward in the competition.

"It is my first goal of the season and I am very happy for it," said Morris who netted 12 goals last season. "I am feeling very good that I have scored, because my manager and coach have been telling me that I need to get on the scoresheet and I am happy that I did that," he said. Morris added that the team is very happy for the win.

"It is a good victory for us because every point in the competition is important and we want to make sure that we continue winning games," he said.

Morris came close to doubling his team's lead in the 80th minute, but his volley from 12-yards went high over the crossbar. The defeat was MBU's second straight of the season, and head coach Vassell Reynolds said he was very disappointed with his team's efforts.

"I am concerned about the number of goals that we have been conceding so far this season," Reynolds said. "I thought we were in the game up to the end, but we weren't good enough in terms of our execution in the final third. I think we have to keep our concentration right through the game and stop conceding goals close to the break." Montego Bay have won just two games so far, drawn four and lost four, for a total of 10 points.
