Atkinson shines again

Jamaica's Alia Atkinson pocketed her second gold medal at the fourth FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China on Saturday.

  Atkinson, 30, added the women's 100 metres breaststroke title to the 50 metres gold she won on Wednesday. She clocked 1:03.51 to finish ahead of American Katie Meili (1:03.63) and Jessica Hansen of Australia, 1:04.61.

Yesterday's medal was Atkinson's third at the meet. On Friday she collected bronze in the women's 100 metres medley in 58.11 seconds. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu won in 57.26 with Runa Imai of Japan getting silver in 57.85.
 

Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica president, Martin Lyn, had described the veteran national swimmer's performance as "spectacular" after she won the 50m breaststroke gold.

The world record holder was winning her first 50m gold medal after three previous silver medal finishes.

"She continues to set the bar high for Jamaica and continues to carry the Jamaica flag to its ultimate glory," Lyn told The Gleaner.
