St Jago's girls top sprint hurdles

St Jago High's girls dominated the sprint hurdles at yesterday's 26th staging of the Purewater/JC/Danny Williams Invitational Development track and field meet at Jamaica College.

The Keilando Goburn-coached girls swept all the sprint hurdles events with Carifta Games Under-17 champion Crystal Morrison winning the Class Two 100m hurdles in an impressive 13.70 seconds. Edwin Allen High's Selieca Myles (14.09 ) was second, and Hydel High's Velecia Williams (14.15) placed third in the event.

Earlier, Jadea Dawkins gave St Jago a winning start after romping the Class Four 70m hurdles in 11.51. Edwin Allen's Shantonique McCall was second in 11.71 ahead of St Elizabeth Technical's Jada Lee James, who was third in 11.94.

Quaycian Davis in Class Three and Class One athlete Rosales Cooper completed the St Jago sweep. Davis topped the Class Three 80 metres in 11.91 while Cooper took the Class One 100m hurdles in 14.32.

In the day's opening event, Jamaica College's Class Two athlete, Robert Graham, gave the hosts the perfect start as he became the first athlete to win a race on the new synthetic track at the Ashenheim Stadium.

Graham won the first heat of the Class Two 400m hurdles in 55.92 seconds. Shemar Uter (56.45) of Wolmer's Boys and Calabar High's Javelin Fullerton (57.37) ended second and third, respectively.

Calabar's Dean Clarke, competing in Class One for the first time, took the 400m hurdles in 54.92 from St Elizabeth Technical's Roshane Bartlett (55.01). Clarke's teammate, Ramone Lindo, was third in 55.09.

In the boys' sprint hurdles, St Jago's Class Two pair of Vashaun Vascianna and Jahvel Granville, one-two at last year's Boys' Championships, continued from where they left off in the class. Vascianna won the 110m hurdles in 13.61, while Granville was second overall in 14.39. Last year's Class Three 100m hurdles champion Matthew Neil Sutherland of JC was third in a decent 14.61.
