Victory Cup youth tourney on today
The sixth annual Youth Football Victory Cup, (formerly Soccer Fest) will be held today at the Shortwood Teachers’ College Field in Kingston.
Last year, all the action was in the Under-6 category, but this year’s tournament will see the addition of an under-8 section, which will see 30 teams competing over one day for the Victory Cup Under-6 and Under-8 trophies.
Victory Cup, the largest one-day youth tournament in Jamaica, showcases football teams from 16 committee-selected schools/clubs from across the island, vying for the top spot each year.
The competition will be played in a round- robin format.
Youth development
“It’s all about youth development and fun. A lot of football programmes happen around Jamaica for this age group, and this gives them a platform to showcase their skills,” said Gregory Jones from Champion Sports Management, one of the organisers of the event.
He added that the competition is devoted to giving children exposure to the sport, a platform to display their talents and also prepare them for future leadership roles.
The family event is expected to see over 300 participants and hundreds of spectators, who will be entertained throughout the day.
Last year, Emmanuel Christian Academy copped first place after defeating Ballaz Academy in a 4-0 victory.
The event is sponsored by Tru Finishes, Butterkist, Serge Island, 1080 events, Creative Media and Events, Lifespan water, Lasco Idrade, Western Sports, Starlight Production, and Blacktie Images.
