Rising squash stars Savannah Thomson and Tobias Levy continued their 2019 winning streaks with victories in the Tingrinners Age Group Squash Tournament held at the Liguanea Club in Kingston recently.

Thomson, the reigning All-Jamaica Under-15/17 girls’ champion, got the better of arch-rival Mia Todd 3-1 to remain undefeated with three tournaments under her belt so far this year.

Similarly, All-Jamaica Under-15 boys’ champion Tobias Levy maintained his clean slate by overcoming yet another spirited challenge from the improving Rhys Greenland. Levy went the distance to hold off his challenger with a 12-10, 4-11, 12-10, 3-11, 11-6 victory.

Reigning Under-13 boys’ champion Lukas Thomson also made a statement, beating Lek Drummond 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 to confirm his dominance in that age category.

Another solid performance was delivered by former Under-11 All-Jamaica girls’ champion Mehar Trehan, who claimed her first tournament win in the Under-13 age group by beating Samantha Azan 11-1, 11-9, 13-11. In addition, Karan Chatani beat Noah Ho Tai 11-5, 11-6, 13-11 to win the Under-17/19 age category.

The tournament is one of the last competitions for the youngsters as they enter the final stages of preparation for the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s Junior Championships, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in early July.

DEPTH OF TALENT

The Jamaica Squash Association’s junior programme manager, Gill Binnie, expressed satisfaction with the players’ ongoing preparation.

“It’s a different level of competition on the regional stage, so it’s good to see our players doing well in local competitions and getting in match practice. So they will be in good mental and physical shape for the Caribbean Championships, and we have to thank Tingrinners for putting on the tournament,” she said.

“Our top age-group players continue to be consistent, but we are also pleased to see the depth of the talent as players across the board continue to show their worth, and we are hoping to field a strong team,” Binnie added.
