Robinson ready to take control at Netball Ja

Tricia Robinson is set to become the new president of Netball Jamaica (NJ) when Dr Paula Daley-Morris’ tenure expires at the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) in November.

The Sunday Gleaner understands that Robinson, who is the current first vice-president of the organisation, is the clear favourite to take over from Daley-Morris, who will not be seeking re-election.

NJ’s constitution stipulates that in order for one to become eligible to run for the post of president, he or she must be a board member for two-years.

Robinson is among four board members who are qualified to contest the post of presidency with the others being Wayne Shaw, Janet Johnson, and Leonni Phinn.

However, all three candidates have indicated that they will be not contesting the election, which leaves Robinson as the clear front-runner for the post.

Robinson, who has been a member of NJ board for the past two years, told The Sunday Gleaner that she is very excited about the prospect of leading the organisation whenever Daley-Morris walks away.

“It would be an honour to serve my country, and it is always an honour to serve this nation,” said Robinson, who is currently the president of the Business House Netball Association. “I have had a lot of experience in netball, and I will be ready to serve if I am elected at the AGM in November.”

Robinson, who has been a netball administrator for the past 20 years, underlines that it would be a major accomplishment for her to lead NJ and that she is looking forward to the challenges that the responsibility presents as well as working with all the major stakeholders once she is elected to the post.

“It is another challenge, and it is taking on the national body versus the body that dealt with corporate entities islandwide, and so I will be ready to serve my country,” Robinson said.

Meanwhile, Daley-Morris, who has led the organisation since 2015, has decided that she will be not be seeking re-election. Under her guidance, the Sunshine Girls won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018.

However, the Jamaicans performed well below expectations at the recent Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, where they finished a disappointing fifth in the championships. In fact, the Sunshine Girls were missing the semi-finals for the first time since 1995.
