A hat-trick from Kenroy Campbell saw Rusea’s High School to an impressive start to the 2019 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup season with a 7-1 trashing of Merlene Ottey High at the Collin Miller Sports Complex yesterday.

Campbell’s goals came in the 11th, 33rd, and 66th minutes.

Chad Howell (38th) and Jeremy Cooke, along with two own goals by Merlene Ottey in the 28th and fifth minutes, secured the massive win for the 2017 champions. The lone goal for the visitors came from Romario Thompson in the 52nd minute.

Despite witnessing his team score seven goals, Dwayne Ambersley, head coach of Rusea’s, said that he was not entirely pleased with them not keeping a clean sheet despite being happy with the overall team performance.

“I’m not entirely pleased because we didn’t keep the clean sheet. However, from a team perspective, the youths looked more confident in their play and are trying to play from the back, which we are looking to do this season. I know there were a few missed passes here and there because it’s the first game with butterflies in their stomach,” said Ambersley.

“Getting seven goals and creating numerous chances, we know we just have to build on that going forward,” he added.

Ambersley, who added that he was proud of the way his senior players stood up, singled out Campbell, who he believes can be a key player for them this season.

“He (Campbell) is in his third season now, and it’s always important that one put the seniority to good use. Getting three goals is always good for his confidence and the team going forward. It’s always good to have someone reliable and who will score goals apart from the number nine, so we are looking forward to an exciting season,” Ambersley added.
