STETHS deny Munro with late goal

St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) Mushtaq Christopher produced some last-minute heroics to help his team avoid defeat in their 1-1 draw with Munro College in Group E action of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup at Munro College field yesterday.

Munro were gifted the lead in the 32nd minute when a miscommunication between the goalkeeper and both central defenders saw them collide, which resulted in Jaheim McIntosh passing the ball into the back of the STETHS net.

Munro continued to pile pressure on STETHS, who started losing their composure and resorted to a physical game. However, just when the hosts started to believe that they had all three points wrapped up, Adam Griffiths produced a darting run down the right before putting a low cross in the box straight to Christopher, who drew the visitors level in the 90th minute.

Omar Rambo Wedderburn, coach of STETHS, was proud of the character shown by his team to come back to take a point off their rivals.

“It’s always good to come up here and leave with something if not all three (points) then at least one. The game plan today was to cut out their diagonal passes. I think we slipped one time and paid for it,” Wedderburn said.

NEVER SAY DIE

“This never-say-die attitude and play until the referee blows to leave the field is the mentality of STETHS. I really feel proud of the performance of the boys. This is something we can build on to go and win a title or two. When a team can play on under this magnitude of pressure and not come out on the losing end, you know that’s a plus,” he added.

Patrick ‘Jackie’ Walters, coach of Munro, said that despite being somewhat disappointed in not getting all three points at home, he, too, was pleased with his team’s performance.

“This is how football is. The bottom line for us is to qualify for the next round, and I think we are on our way to doing that. The scoreline could have been different if we took our chances, but you know with schoolboys, it’s unpredictable,” Walters added.

“We have to work on our finishing and get the ball in the back of the net more often in these games. We have to play the ball earlier and quicker and move quickly so the other teams have to play catch-up,” Walters added.
