Cornwall ready to joust with STGC

The quarter-finals of the lucrative ISSA Champions Cup get on the way this evening with defending champions Cornwall College (CC) facing St George’s College (STGC) in the late game of the Montego Bay Sports Complex double header at 6:30 p.m.

CC, who knocked St George’s out of the competition last year at the semi-finals stage, are attempting to be the first team to successfully defend the title since its inception in 2014. This is after becoming the first rural team to lift the cup last season.

The Dean Weatherly-coached team will be going into the game on the back of a 1-0 over Charlie Smith in the round of 16 at the same venue last Saturday. STGC, on the other hand, are coming off of a 3-1 defeat to St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup.

“It’s going to be a very tough game,” Weatherly said. “We are playing against a well-organised team. They will be coming in like a wounded lion after losing to STATHS so it won’t be a walk in the park. They are formidable opponents that have a lot of talent and they have a very good coach in Neville Bell. [This] being a knockout, they are coming with all guns blazing.

“We are here to defend our title. This is also to bring back glory to western Jamaica where football is concerned.”

In the early kick-off at 4 p.m., reigning Manning Cup champions Kingston College (KC) will go up against Frome Technical. KC, who dropped points for the first time this season earlier this week, will be going into today’s game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Wolmer’s Boys. Frome are now down to fighting for this, their only hope of a silverware, after crashing out of the Ben Francis Cup at the quarter-final stage on Tuesday.
