JC, XLCR rematch in Champions Cup

The ISSA Champions Cup continues today as the battle for all-island supremacy moves to the quarter-finals. Excelsior High face Jamaica College (JC) in the second game of a double-header at Stadium East at 6 p.m. The two schools will meet for the second time in the space of three days after their 0-0 draw in Group H of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday. The Davion Ferguson-coached JC brushed aside McGrath High 7-0 in the first round while Excelsior needed penalties to dispatch Dinthill Technical High.
Ferguson says that the previous game doesn’t give his team an advantage, as the Mountain View-based squad also have an idea of the strength that the ‘Dark Blues’ possess. However, he is encouraged by the many chances generated in Wednesday’s draw.
“Although we didn’t win the last game and we didn’t play up to par, we created nine to 10 clear-cut chances,” Ferguson said. “The difference in this game is that we have to score. We have to take at least one or two of those chances and see how Excelsior will react to us.”
In the earlier game at 4 p.m., defending champions Clarendon College take on St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS). Clarendon College have been idle since their 2-0 first-round win over Wolmer’s last Friday as they await the start of the ISSA/WATA DaCosta Cup semi-finals. STATHS are coming into good form after securing a semi-final place in the Manning Cup, defeating St George’s College 3-1 on Wednesday. The Phillip Williams-coached unit, who came from behind to beat Manning’s 2-1 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last Saturday, are battling on two fronts in a bid to end the three decade wait for a schoolboy title.
