Make things right, Molynes – Fitzgerald

Molynes United’s winless streak in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) stretched to 10 matches over the weekend, but new coach Calvert Fitzgerald believes that the team showed some positives in their defeat to Humble Lion and Portmore United, respectively, in their last two games.

The veteran coach expects to start the turnaround to their season when they visit struggling Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex this afternoon, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Molynes relieved coach Lijyasu Simms a few weeks ago and replaced him with Fitzgerald, who was the coach before Simms was put in charge during their Super League campaign.

However, Fitzgerald insists that he has seen some promise from his team and is looking for a change in fortunes starting this afternoon.

“This is my third match in charge, and we have been steadily improving as a team. The fitness level and the discipline in the team wasn’t where it was supposed to be, so we are working on those areas, and game after game, we expect to get better. So I am very positive about the game today,” Fitzgerald told The Gleaner.

The former Tivoli Gardens coach knows what to expect from his old charges and is bracing for a tough encounter.

“Tivoli is a never-say-die team with some quality players, and I think they are just finding their stride. So we want a positive result, and I need three points. I am desperately in need of three points, so we are going for the points,” said Fitzgerald, who highlighted poor finishing as a major issues for his team at this point.

“The two games we played were ­encouraging, and the only reason we didn’t get a point (from either game) was because of basic defensive errors,” he continued.

“Our biggest problem is, we are not finishing. We are creating opportunities, but we are finding it difficult to get the ball in the net. Against Portmore, we created more opportunities and lost two-nil, while it (chances) was even in the Humble Lion match, and we lost one-nil. But as soon as we start putting the ball in the net, we expect to get some positive results, and this midweek game could be the time we start putting some points on the board,” he added.

Molynes, who were second at the end of the first round, have now slipped to eighth with 20 points, while 10th placed Tivoli (15 points) sit just one point above the relegation zone.

League leaders Waterhouse (33) will look to rebound from their defeat to Mount Pleasant on Friday when they take on third-placed Arnett Gardens at Drewsland at 8:00 p.m., while Harbour View host Vere United at 8 p.m.
