Excelsior’s Craig Campbell crosses the line in front at the Wesley Powell/HIC Track and Field Meet at Excelsior High School in 2016.

Local high school and college coaches will get a chance to see where their preparations are before they go on Christmas break, as they will be able to test their athletes at two development meets today.

The Tyser Mills Meet will be held at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports, while the Wesley Powell/Heart Institute of the Caribbean Invitational Track and Field Meet Meet will take place at Excelsior High School, with both meets set to start at 8:30 a.m.

Distance events

Both meets will feature irregular or over-distance events and will see athletes competing in track shoes. Some 76 events will contested at Excelsior, where the athletes will be competing on a nine-lane 400m track.

This will be the 17th staging of the Wesley Powell meet, which has become a very popular early-season marker. The meet will include several field events with the Class One and Class Two girls set to battle for high jump honours at 8:30 a.m., at the same time, the boys’ 5000m Open will kick off the track events.

Other field events scheduled to take place on the day are the long jump, javelin throw, and discus for both males and females.

Track events include the 150m, 300m, 600m, 1000m, and 4x300m relays, which will close out the day’s proceedings.
