St Jago in charge at Central Champs

St Jago High are the leaders in both the boys and girls sections after day one of the two-day Digicel Central Championships at GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport yesterday.

After nine girls’ finals, the top five are St Jago 87 points, defending champions Edwin Allen High 78.5, Hydel High 48, Holmwood Technical 42 and Vere Technical 28.50.

St Jago, the defending boys champions, are runaway leaders after 10 finals with 101 points. Closing out the top five are Edwin Allen 41, Bridgeport 34, Knox College 23 and Jonathan Grant 22.

Edwin Allen’s sprinters, led by Class Two athlete Brandy Hall, were in terrific form yesterday. Hall won her 100m heat in a record of 11.46 seconds, erasing the old mark of 11.58 set last year by Holmwood Technical’s Sashieka Steele. Steele (11.50) and Hall’s teammate Tia Clayton (11.55) also went under the old mark in winning their heats

IN Classes Three and Four Edwin Allen also had the fastest qualifiers for today’s 100m finals.

In Class One, St Jago’s Kayla Bonnick was also among the record-breakers. She won her heat in 11.64 to beat the old mark of 11.72 which was held jointly by Vere Technical’s Rene Medley and St Jago’s Shurria Henry.

Despite not being among the records yesterday, Edwin Allen’s ace sprinter Kevona Davis continued her fine form with an effortless win in the preliminary round of the Class One 200m. Competing in heat two, Davis covered the field in a flash and came off the curve way in front before cruising home in 23.59 seconds, the fastest time going into today’s final.

STRONG MESSAGE

Davis was very pleased with her win and sent out a strong message for the final.

“I felt very good as I had a lot left in me and I can’t wait for the final,” she said after her run.

Holmwood’s Zoey-Ann Wint won the first final on the day as she took home the open 2000m steeplechase for girls in seven minutes 16.22 seconds ahead of St Jago High Brittannia Willis (7:20.25) and Holmwood’s Samantha Pryce, 7:23.85.

On the male side, Edwin Allen’s Timothy Haye won the 2000m steeplechase in 6:10.96. Bellefield High’s Romoy Grant (6:14.25) was second and Malcolm Morgan of Spalding High, third in 6:31.82.

Brandon Lloyd of Clarendon College captured the Class One discus after a throw of 54.80m. Favourite Christopher Young of Edwin Allen was next with 53.99m with third going to his teammate, Trevor Gunzell, 51.32m.

St Jago’s athletes dominated the boys 100m. The most impressive was Javari Thomas who led the way with a record run of 10.52 in Class One. His teammate Jamar Treasure also went under the old mark of 10.58 seconds after ­winning his heat in 10.54.
