Port Royal Basic School to benefit from Royal Jamaica Yacht Club Fishing Tournament

Proceeds from the 18th staging of the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club fishing tournament is set to assist in the upgrade of the facilities at the Port Royal Basic School.

A new bathroom, as well as the improvement of the school's playground, will be just some of the work that will be done following the completion of the fishing tournament, which got underway yesterday and will end today.

Tournament organiser Brandon Samms, says the Yacht Club continues to give back to sections of the society which require assistance with legacy projects.

“What we have done is to set aside the entrants' money to assist with these projects. We have already donated a printer to the schools and one of our members has pledged to purchase a toilet and a sink to spruce up the school’s bathroom facility," said Samms.

Following donations of school bags and books to the school, the organisation has also pledged to donate materials to improve the play-ground.

In the meantime, some 17 vessels are expected to battle over the two days for top honours in the 18th staging of the annual Royal Jamaica Yacht Club tournament.

Anglers will compete in four categories, which include boats over 30 feet, under 30 feet, sailboats and canoes.

Defending Champion ‘Pastime’ will face stiff challenge ‘Integrity’, Real Music’ and 2019 runners up ‘Diana’ for the $250,000 first cash prize.

The Anglers are expected to venture the south-west coast off Portland cottage near Bowdich bank as well as California bank and Cow Bay in the east to try and land the biggest catch of marlins, swordfish, sailfish and Wahoos. The boat with the most points will be declared the overall winner.
