Cardenas scores double win at Caymanas
FORMER champion jockey, Panamanian Dick Cardenas, yesterday booted home a second three-timer in two days, taking his tally to six winners in two meets, his third day in the saddle since returning to Caymanas Park.
Cardenas, the 2011 champion, who recently completed a year-and-a-half stint in North America, won the second event astride BALTUSROL for champion trainer Anthony Nunes.
The Panamanian later made all astride 2-1 chance JENSUNEERA STEEL, benefitting from 3-5 favourite BABY STAR's slow start at five furlongs straight in the eighth event.
Cardenas brought down the curtains on the nine-race card with Nunes' 3-1 chance, GLOCK, who ran through rivals a furlong and a half out for a strong victory at five furlongs round after finishing fourth in the recent 1000 Guineas.
Meanwhile, six-time former champion, Omar Walker continues to fend off Anthony Thomas, after each rode a winner, in their battle for second in the riders' standings being led by Dane Nelson on 31 wins.
Walker produced PURPLE WAYNE with a storming stretch run to collar DEEP BLUE SEA, who was beaten by the distance, trying to go all the way at seven and a half furlongs in the third event.
Thomas responded in the fifth aboard 5-2 chance WHATEVER, moving to 23 wins, one behind Walker, closing in the stretch run at seven furlongs to outfinish a weakening TRICKSTER.
Racing continues at the weekend with back-to-back meets, Saturday and Sunday.
