ISSA’s executive body met with more than 120 high school coaches yesterday regarding proposals for hosting this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs).

Champs Organising Committee Chairman Richard Thompson said ISSA is still awaiting approval from the Government to have the event in late April.

“We met with coaches of the respective schools to inform them of the plans our association has for the hosting of the Championships,” Thompson told The Gleaner. “We are preparing to have Champs between April 27 and May 1, pending approval of the Government.

“We are very confident that we will get the green light as recently, we saw where the JAAA (Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association) got the approval to host several weekend meets, and they all went through without any hitches, so, we are confident that the Government will give us a positive response.

“The coaches were informed of adjustments to the schedule of the meet, protocols in place to monitor COVID compliance, technical changes surrounding the meet, the qualification process, along with eligibility requirements for this year’s Championships.

“We also gave credit to all member institutions, along with sponsors and other critical stakeholders, for their continued support.”
