Jamaica eliminated from Gold Cup by the United States
There will be no fourth straight trip to the Concacaf Gold Cup semi-finals for Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz were defeated 1-0 by the United States in their quarter-final game at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Sunday evening.
Matthew Hoppe scored the winner seven minutes from time as the United States secured a semi-final encounter with guest country Qatar on Thursday.
Jamaica's best chances came in the first half when Junior Flemmings' curling shot was saved by US goalkeeper Matt Turner in the 38th minute. Soon after, Bobby Reid was free in the box but could only manage a tame shot which was easily saved. The United States grew in confidence in the second half and put the Jamaicans under pressure throughout the second half.
With Jamaica's Gold Cup campaign now complete, their next assignment will be the final round of World Cup qualifiers, beginning on September 2 against Mexico, in Mexico City.
