The USA's Sydney McLaughlin broke her own world record when she won the Women's 400m Hurdles final at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday morning.

McLaughlin clocked 51.46 seconds, to erase the previous world record of 51.90s which she set at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon on June 26 this year.

As a result, she also erased the Olympic record of 52.64s set by Jamaica's Melaine Walker at the Beijing Games in August 2008.

McLaughlin defeated her compatriot Dalilah Muhammad, who clocked the second fastest time in history, 51.58s, for silver.

The Netherlands' Femko Bol took the bronze in a European record of 52.03s.

Jamaica's national champion Janieve Russell placed fourth in a personal best time of 53.08s.
