Garvey Maceo romp to fourth straight win

GARVEY MACEO High School picked up where they left off in 2019, announcing themselves as daCosta Cup title contenders after their 3-0 win over Central High on home soil yesterday made it four wins from as many games.

The Clarendon-based school has a squad that many believe is ripe for title contention, after winning both the Under-14 and Under-16 all-island titles in 2019, and managing to hold on to many of those players.

Coach Merron Gordon has gracefully accepted their title contenders tag and said they are getting better game by game.

“Not in terms of result, but I think today was one of our better games. Like any other team, the year and a half these boys didn’t play football really affected them. Hopefully we can peak at the right time and challenge for a title because we are getting better,” said Gordon.

“There are so many cups to play for and we are going after something. We are aiming for the big one, but if we don’t get it we will have to hold on to another one,” he added.

TEAM FELL SHORT ON PENALTIES

Garvey Maceo’s senior team also made it to the finals of the Ben Francis Cup, but fell short on penalties to B.B. Coke High School.

Gordon, who believes if they had played last year they would have been extremely strong, said they have managed to hold on to key players who even played in the recently concluded Jamaica Premier League.

“We held on to the major ones although we lost some to other schools. The year and a half that we didn’t play any football really damaged their fine motor skills. However, little by little the touches are coming back and the football brain is ticking over again. So hopefully we can challenge for a title,” Gordon reaffirmed.

“We have Gregory Cousins who played for Vere United and Cleo Clarke who played for Cavalier and they bring a lot of experience to our team. Clarke was the captain of the Under-14 winning team and Cousins led the Under-16 winning team, so their leadership is invaluable. Not playing for so long, coming back and winning a title would be great for these boys and the school.”
