No track and field meets today
Local athletes who performed well at last Saturday’s successful Purewater/R. Danny Williams track and field meet at Jamaica College will not get a chance to continue their good form this weekend, as today’s four scheduled track and field meets have either been cancelled or postponed. In what is a busy Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) calendar which includes the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships and the Carifta Games in April inside the National Stadium, athletes will have to wait until next weekend to get back on track. The Douglas Forrest Invitational at G.C. Foster College, JAAA/PUMA Development Meet One at Kirkvine Sports Club, JAAA/PUMA Development Meet Two at the Stadium East, and the Manchester High/Charlie Fuller Field Events have either been postponed or cancelled.
According to a reliable source, the meets were called off because, under the COVID-19 protocols, meet organisers have to get permission from the Government six weeks ahead of the scheduled meet date, and this was not done.
It is likely that three of the meets will be kept at a later date but the Douglas Forrest Invitational will not be held this year, because the organisers are having difficulty in getting sponsorship for the staging of this meet.
Four more meets are scheduled for next Saturday. They are the North Central Development meet at Discovery Bay, Central Hurdles, Throws and Relays at G. C. Foster College, Big Shot Invitational at Excelsior High School, and McKenley/Wint Invitational at Calabar High School.
