Gayle: We will fight for every point

Following his team’s 3-0 win over nine-man Cavalier yesterday, Waterhouse coach Marcel Gayle insists his team can get even better in this season’s Jamaica Premier League.
Gayle said the result is a reflection of the hard work in training over the last week, and despite Cavalier losing a player at the end of each half, he thought they were fully deserving of full points.
“The result is a reflection of what we did all week in training, so credit to the guys,” he said. “It is early season and we are trying to get better each game. We didn’t start how we wanted to and some factors contributed to that. But we got ourselves into the game and got the go-ahead goal and we were good from there,” he said.
“Cavalier got a red card but we made the goal. The second half we started flat but we got better and everyone played their part. We will fight for every point and we respect all teams and prepare for them. But we can get better,” he added.
Cavalier started the game well and should have been two goals up early in the half but Courtney Allen missed what were two very easy chances. However, 17 minutes into the contest Waterhouse’s Andre Fletcher broke loose and fired past Jaedine White for the opening goal.
Four minutes before the interval, Cavalier’s Bryan English was shown a red card for aggressive play, reducing his team to 10 players.
Then a minute into first half stoppage time, Waterhouse added a second goal when Richard King failed to deal with a pass in the box and Fletcher got possession and slotted past White from six yards.
With their extra man, Waterhouse controlled the second half and had chances through Andre Leslie and Denardo Thomas but could not make them count.
Cavalier also had opportunities through Dwayne Atkinson and Collin Anderson.
In time added on, White was called for a foul on Devroy Grey resulting in a penalty which Chevon Stewart converted to put Waterhouse 3-0 up.
At the end of the match, Jamoi Topey also saw red after a comment directed to referee Odette Hamilton.
Cavalier coach, Rudolph Speid, said they wasted their opportunities while Waterhouse took theirs.
“We missed opportunities throughout the game and they scored their chances. The first 10 minutes we could have scored three. We didn’t play badly and we got a lot of chances throughout the game, we just never scored,” he said.
“They scored their first opportunity and we got a red card just before half-time and that made it more difficult. But we still got chances in the second half. But then a penalty was awarded against us. So the score looks bad but I don’t think were that bad. But Waterhouse were motivated more than us,” he conceded.
