Fully vaccinated fans at Gibson Relays a step in the right direction – coaches
COACHES MICHAEL Dyke, Bertland Cameron and Maurice Wilson are all elated with the news that fans will be allowed back into the National Stadium for the Gibson McCook Relays, calling the government decision ‘a step in the right direction.’
IT HAS been nearly two years since spectators were allowed to attend sporting competitions in the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a few exceptions here and there.
Two days ago, track and field fans breathed a sigh of relief as the new format of the relays marks the first track and field event to have spectators, with an announcement that the meet scheduled for Saturday, February 26 has been approved by the Government to have 10,000 fully vaccinated fans.
WELCOMED RELIEF
“This is indeed a welcome relief as the athletes will have more motivation in competing and definitely they will be happy for that,” said Dyke, head coach of Edwin Allen High School.
“I am happy that fully vaccinated fans will get a chance to support their athletes, and hopefully those who love track and field will be encouraged to get vaccinated,” said fomer Olympian, Cameron.
Wilson, the technical leader of the national senior team and the man in charge at the G.C. Foster College-based Sprintec track club, had high praises for the Ministry of Local Government.
“A big thanks to all parties involved in giving the green light, as the fans are hungry to see some action while this is indeed good for the athletes and will lift their performances,” said Wilson.
