Carifta head coach confident in 78-member strong team
COREY BENNETT, the head coach of Jamaica’s Carifta track and field team, says the 78-member unit named for the Games, scheduled to take place in Jamaica from April 16-18, is very strong and he expects the nation to continue its usual dominance.
The U20 boys will be led by J’Voughnn Blake, DeAndre Daley, Bryan Levell and Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, while the U17s, by Tyrone Lawson and Romario Hines.
The U20 girls are headlined by the Clayton sisters, Tia and Tina, and former Class Four sensation, Brianna Lyston, while the Under-17s are being spearheaded by Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, Camoy Binger, and Shemonique Hazle.
Bennett, also the coach of Hydel, said the team was well selected and he expects them to deliver on the high expectations at the Games.
“It is a very strong team. The team was properly selected. I noticed one or two key names are missing but it is a very strong team and I think they will put on a good show over the Easter weekend. With a team as strong as this, we are going to retain the title just by the quality of talent, and I expect us to put in some strong performances,” he said.
Bennett was unable to fully digest the make-up of the team, but, at first glance, he thinks the usual dominance will continue.
“I don’t have any concerns as yet. I am just hearing about the team and I haven’t had a chance to digest the list properly. But, by the look of it, it is a very strong team and Jamaica tends to dominate Carifta Games and I don’t think this will be any different.
“I don’t know much about the other countries but the look on paper is this is a really good team. Persons like J’Voughnn Blake (800/1500m runner), I expect to be at his best,” he said.
Forty girls and 38 boys make up the list of athletes. There will also be a management contingent of 14, led by Chef de Mission, Dr Oniel Ankle.
