IT WAS all joy at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships for Camperdown’s Victoria Christie as she dedicated her gold medal to her mother, Joy Christie, who was celebrating her birthday yesterday.

Christie won the Class Two shot put with a mark of 14.59 metres at the National Stadium as Natassia Burrell from Hydel took home silver with a throw of 13.99. The bronze medal went to Immaculate’s Maja Henry with a throw of 13.51.

The 17-year-old, who also won the Corporate Area Championships a few weeks ago, said her mother has been a tower of strength in her life and therefore she was happy to have won the gold medal for her.

“This is a birthday gift for my mom because she has been my motivation all my life,” said Christie. “I love you and it doesn’t end here for me,” she said.

“She is my number one supporter, and she has been behind me through everything,” Christie said.

MOTIVATION

She added that there were many times when she felt like giving up, but it was her mother who kept motivating her.

“She has been there through the tough times and times that I wanted to give up, and she is the one who pushed me through,” Christie said.

Christie, who said her preparations entering Champs were not ideal because of issues with her training schedule, was surprised the competition wasn’t stiffer.

“It is a great feeling, but it was expected because throughout my season, I have been executing well,” said Christie.

“It (training) was hard, but other from that, I knew what I wanted, and I came and I delivered and I am excited,” she said.

“I expected my competitors to be a bit more aggressive, and I expected more from them,” she said.
