JAMAICA OVERTOOK the Dominican Republic in Group C of their Concacaf Women’s Championship qualifiers after a big 9-0 win over the Cayman Islands at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Cayman, yesterday.

A hat-trick from captain Khadija Shaw(54th, 56th and 65th minutes of play) led the way for the Jamaicans. There was also a hat-trick for Trudi Carter, who opened the scoring for the Jamaica in the seventh minute of play, adding two more in less than a minute (16th).

Before that, Cayman did their cause no help with a Tamoy Phillips own goal. Jody Brown also heaped some pain on the hosts with a 14th-minute strike.

Jamaica’s final goal came from Kayla McCoy in the 88th minute.

The Reggae Girlz started the game second in the group on six points from two wins. The Dominican Republic led the group with nine points from three, having played on Friday where they beat Bermuda 1-0.

KEEP PACE

The result meant Jamaica not only needed to win to keep pace, but had to make up a six-goal deficit heading into the final game of the round against the Dominican Republic.

Had the Jamaicans failed to make up the goal difference, the Dominican Republic could have played for a draw and won the group when the teams meet in the final game slated for Tuesday at Sabina Park in Jamaica at 6 p.m.

As it stands, it is Jamaica, who now hold the slim advantage and can afford to draw, with only the winner of the group going on to the Concacaf Women’s Championship, a qualifier for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.
