Jackson wins again, Clayton back to competing

JAMAICANS AT the Bermuda Games at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire had reason to celebrate yesterday after some good performances bode well ahead of the IAAF World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, next on the horizon for the country’s seniors.

Chief among the performers was Shericka Jackson, who is continuing to run in the 400 metres. Jackson won the event at the Bermuda Games in 51.40 seconds, finishing ahead of another Jamaican, Candice McLeod, who clocked a season’s best 51.57. The pair got the better of the United States’ Jaide Stepter Baynes, 51.93.

Briana Williams, running in her first competitive 200 metres of the year, finished third in 23.82 seconds, in a race won by the Bahamas’ Anthonique Strachan, 23.24, and the United States’ Dezerea Bryant, 23.72.

Natasha Morrison was fifth in the women’s 100 metres, clocking 11.77 to finish behind the United States Teahna Daniels, 11.45, Gabby Thomas, 11.49, Javianne Oliver, 11.62, and Destiny Smith-Barnett, 11.66.

In the women’s 400-metre hurdles, Jamaicans were happy to see the return of 2019 World Championships bronze medallist, Rushell Clayton, who finished second in 55.89 behind compatriot Shiann Salmon, 55.35. Third was Janieve Russell in 56.56.

Jamaica’s Chrisann Gordon-Powell was second in the women’s 800 metres, clocking two minutes, four point one-nine seconds to end behind the United States’ Ajee Wilson, 2:03.09.

Kimberley Williamson was fourth in the women’s high jump, clearing the bar at 1.84 metres. Williams position came on count back after winner United States’ Rachel McCoy, and her teammates Amina Smith, and Inika McPherson also cleared the same height.

PORTER THIRD IN LONG JUMP

Chanice Porter, 6.70 metres, and Tissanna Hickling, 6.50, finished second and third in the women’s long jump behind the United States’ Quanesha Burs, 6.77.

In the triple jump, Shanieka Ricketts, with 14.15, had the longest hop, skip and jump of the day, finishing further in the pit than Great Britain’s Naomi Metzger, 14.00, and the United States’ Michelle Fokam.

In the men’s 100 metres, Yohan Blake, with 10.45 seconds, finished behind Canada’s Jerome Blake, 10.38, as well as the United States’ Erriyon Knighton, 10.39, and Noah Lyles, who had the same time but lost on photo finish replay.

Jaheel Hyde ran 46.27 in the 400 for men, to finish third behind Grenada’s Kirani James, 45.63, and Great Britain’s Alex Haydock-Wilson, 46.05.

Former Calabar High School standout, Dejour Russell, 14.58, was fifth in the men’s 110-metre hurdles, in a race won by Barbados’ Shane Brathwaite, 13.78.

Jordan Scott, with a leap of 16.37 metres, was second in the men’s triple jump behind the United States’ Chris Benard, 16.57.
