Hydel High School’s 4x400-metre relay team celebrates winning the event at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships inside the National Stadium recently.

AFTER VICTORIES in 2017 and 2018 in the High School Girls’ Championship of America 4x400m at the Penn Relays, the Corey Bennett-coached Hydel High School look well set to return to winning ways this Friday at 4:05 p.m. Jamaican time and make up for their second-place finish behind Holmwood Technical in 2019.

Hydel, who are the record holders in the event after their winning time of 3:33.99 seconds done in 2017, where their crack team included the likes of Charokee Young , Roneisha McGregor and Shian Salmon, have been very impressive in their two wins this season.

At the Gibson McCook Relays, Hydel clocked an impressive time of 3 minutes 33.76 seconds and at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships in 3:35.38. On both occasions, Edwin Allen and Holmwood Technical ended second and third, respectively.

At the Gibson McCook Relays it was 200m sprinting sensation, Brianna Lyston, who had the fans in a frenzy with a sub-51 second on the anchor leg. Another brilliant performance is expected once again from Lyston as her team will be hoping to break their own record. The likes of Oneika McAnnuf and Aaliyah Baker are expected to play crucial roles.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE

Both Edwin Allen and Holmwood should once again find the Ferry-based team from St Catherine too hot to handle, despite Michael Dyke’s (coach of Edwin Allen) confidence in pulling off an upset.

“Hydel has a very strong quartet but I am not ruling out my team’s chance at Penn Relays because strange things happen at Penns,” said Dyke of his five-time champions in a recent interview with The Gleaner.

Dyke is hoping that half-milers Jessica McLeod and Rushana Dwyer can make a big difference in his team’s bid at stopping Hydel.
