If the celebrations to send off the Super Six female shooting squad are anything to go by, Jamaica is set to celebrate when the team returns from the Pan American Handgun Championship which will take place in Frostproof, Florida, September 14-21.

The history-making female shooters were feted by title sponsor Spectrum Systems at The Jamaica Pegasus on Thursday. The team is set to jet off early next week for the International Practical Shooting Confederation level four championship.

The Super Six – Yeonnie Campbell, Renee Rhickie, Sasha Mullings, Shayon Francis, Kayla Keane and Shevenese Sessions, who will be making the trip to Florida, are set to face stiff competition in the various divisions which will feature more than 28 countries from North, Central and South America.

Team leader for the Super Six squad, Detective Corporal Mullings, says the team is ready and raring to go as the ladies get ready to compete in the Production Optics Division.

“We are ready and when we come back, Jamaica will have proof that we are number one in shooting,” Mullings said.

The Super Six squad had intensified their tactical training under the watchful eyes of coaches Andy Yap and Anthony Johnson. They also stepped up their fitness level in preparation for the arduous stages following gym sessions from Elite fitness.

Team member Kayla Keane says the team is taking a no-nonsense approach to the competition as coach Yap has thrown down the gauntlet to the ladies.

“Coach made it clear that there should be absolutely no negative talk, and if we talk about anything negative, we have to do 50 burpees,” Keane jokingly mentioned.

The team’s participation at the championships was made possible by the kind sponsorship of Spectrum Systems through the company’s chief executive officer, Andrew Stanigar.

The multimillion-dollar sponsorship will see the team’s airfare, accommodation and match rounds taken care of, and Stanigar believes the ladies will represent the team and the country well in Florida.

“I have seen these ladies rise to the challenge to beat the best male shooters in Jamaica. They did that with heart, determination and planning. If they can perform at that level with teamwork, ingenuity and strategy, they will do well. I am confident that they are going to make us proud.”
